Section 8 of the Code of Conduct – Freedom of Expression reads:
“The Green Party’s approach to ethical conduct is guided by its philosophical basis and core values, which include a commitment to freedom of self-expression and the non-violent resolution of conflict.“
If this paragraph is to mean anything, members must have freedom of speech and be able to openly debate. That means feeling able to state a controversial opinion, disagree with an individual, a Party policy, or their local party, safe in the knowledge that they will be treated with respect. This freedom does not, of course, give anyone the right to insult or bully anyone, or bring the Party into disrepute.
Many of us who have been suspended or expelled have done nothing more than express a view which some other members in powerful positions do not agree with. The complaints process has been used to identify and target us. Stating that you don’t believe a man can become a woman can get you suspended. Asking questions on an email list about Party procedures can get you suspended.
One member wrote, on being suspended:
“I want to maintain my commitment to the party up to the time, if it ever happens, that the party demonstrates it is too small to welcome a freethinker like me.“
This member was expelled shortly afterwards.
